The following are some tips for troubleshooting your DualShock 3 Controller.

1. Synchronization

The DualShock 3 controllers must be synchronized with your PS3 console before you can use them to control the system. Connect the DualShock 3 controller using the USB cable included with your PS3 console. Next, press the center “PS” button on the DualShock 3 controller. The red indicator lights on the controller will flash briefly, then light up solidly. When they are finished flashing, the synchronization is complete.

2. Enable Vibration

The DualShock 3 controller has vibration, but only with compatible games. You will need to enable the vibration feature for it to work with compatible games. Check the game’s packaging to find out whether it’s compatible with this feature. Vibration must be enabled in-game in order to work. Press the “PS” button the controller and access the menu for “Controller Settings.” Once on this menu, make sure the “Vibration Function” option is turned to “On.” If it is in the off position, your controller will not vibrate even if you’re playing a game that supports this feature.

3. Battery Recharging

Check the charge level on the PS3 home menu or by pressing the “PS” button on the controller. If your controller can not get charged, make sure that the PS3 is powered on when your DualShock 3 controller is connected to a USB port. The PS3 will not charge a controller when it is powered off, so either keep the controller connected while playing games or leave the console running to recharge your controller (If the internal battery inside the DualShock 3 Controller won’t charge even when the system is on, you may need to purchase a replacement controller).

If you do not want to leave the system powered on, a PC will charge the DualShock 3 controller while in sleep mode. Plug your DualShock 3 controller into a USB port on your PC. If the four red lights on its top  begin to blink, your DualShock 3 controller is charging.

4. Resetting

If your DualShock 3 controllers are not recognized by the PS3 console, resetting the controller is an option to help repair this issue. Flip the DualShock 3 controller so the buttons are facing your lap; on the back of the DualShock 3 controller, a “Reset” button is placed near the “L2″ button. The reset button needs to be pressed using a small object, like the head of a needle or a paper clip. Hold the “reset” button in for a few seconds. After that, the DualShock 3 controller will no longer be associated with the PS3 console. Re-sync the DualShock 3 controller before using it again.

How to Use a DualShock 3 Controller on a PC?

The DualShock 3 Controller is an upgraded version of the Sixaxis controller for the Playstation 3, which includes all of the features of  the Sixaxis controller, but also adds vibration funtion. Requirements:

• a PC
• MotioninJoy software package
• Accompanying USB cable
• a DualShock 3 controller

Procedure:

1. Download a third-party software package, such as MotioninJoy. The package should contain all the drivers and software needed to allow the DualShock 3 controller to run on the PC. Unzip the compressed files to install. After that, you can find the MotioninJoy option under “all Programs” in the start menu.

2. Plug  the mini-USB end of the USB cable to your DualShock 3 controller  while the other end to the PC.
3. Click on the “start”-“All Programs”-“MotioninJoy”-“Install USB driver”. Right click and use the “run as administrator” option, then the installation will begin automatically. A notepad will pop up and show you the install status.

4. Press the “PS” button to boot the DualShock 3 Controller at first (you will have to do so every time you turn off the PC or disconnect the USB cable).

5. Click on the “Start” menu-”Control Panel”-”Printers and Other Devices” -”Game Controllers” to begin test. The DualShock 3 Controller should be visible there. Right click the icon and select “Properties.” If your controller is responsive to your input, then the installation is successful. The analog sticks are not going to work just yet, don’t worry.

6.Go to “Start”-”All Programs”-”MotioninJoy”-”DS3 TOOL”. Here you can choose between 4 profiles and the vibration function.

* Digital Gamepad(Dpad,without joystick) Digital set up, Dpad works off of the X/Y axis. This is like the PS1 controller, works well for soccer games.
* Analog Gamepad1(POV,Joysticks)Dpad is set to POV/hat switch, the 2 analog sticks are set up on the X,Y, Z and RZ axes. This is like a PS2 controller and is currently the most used.
* Analog Gamepad2(POV,Joysticks,Analog Triggers)Dpad is set to POV/hat switch, the 2 analog sticks are set up on the X,Y, Z and RZ axes, L2 and R2 are also on an axis. This works well for racing games and is similar to the XBOX 360 controller.
* Analog Gamepad3(POV,Joysticks,Analog Triggers,Motion sensor) This is similar to Gamepad2 with the added effect of motion sensors. At the moment it’s not very practical.
* Emulate Xinput Imitates the XBOX 360 controller. Is currently greyed out because it’s still unusable.

7. Load a PC game with controller support. The DualShock 3 controller is fully functional within the game.

Note:

• If you are using a 64-bit PC, you need to restart your PC at the beginning of installation.  Hold F8 upon starup and  select “Disable Driver Signature Enforcement”. This can prevent driver conflicts that can arise.
• It’s strange that Vibration can not work on the game – the Prince of Persia 4 (PC version), maybe only the default Xbox 360 controller can support the vibration in this game, while the Grand Theft Auto 4 even can not play with the controller (patch needed).
• An easier way to use a  controller on a PC is to use an Xbox 360 controller, which Windows can  identifies automatically.

The DualShock 3 controller is the standard wireless controller for the PlayStation 3 console, which vibrates during specific parts of gameplay. The DualShock 3 controller runs on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that is sealed into its housing  and needs charged regularly. There are 3 ways to charge the DualShock 3 controller as follows.

1. To charge the Dualshock by the PS3 game console

• Press the “Power” button on the PS3 console to turn the system on. A red light should illuminate on the front of the console to let you know it’s in standby mode.
• Press the “PS Home” button on the DualShock 3 controller to turn the controller on.
• Plug the standard USB end of the USB charging cable into the USB port on the PS3’s front.
• Insert the mini-USB end of the USB cable into the mini-USB slot on the top of the DualShock 3 controller, and then the red lights on the front of DualShock 3 controller begin blinking. This means that the DualShock 3 controller is charging.
• It needs several hours for the DualShock 3 controller to finish charging.
• The DualShock controller completes charging when the red lights stop blinking.

Note：you can play games while PS3 are charging the DualShock 3 controller. Keep the peripheral temperature at around 10-30°C, or the charging of the DualShock 3 controller may become unstable; Make sure the PS3 console is on while charging, or the DualShock 3 controller can’t get charged.

2. To charge the DualShock 3 controller by hooking it up to a PC. Use the same way as above.

3. Buy a charger to charge DualShock 3 controller. It’s much easier for charging with a charger that you only need to plug one end of the charger into the wall outlet to charge the DualShock 3 controller independently.

Note: The advantage of the latter two methods is that you don’t need to turn the PS3 console on, which is really a high power electrical appliances.
